Description

Salet is a hybrid Moss shrub in the rose family (Rosaceae) that was bred by Francois Lacharme of France in 1854. It was introduced to Australia in 1866 as 'Salet'. Moss rose derives its name from the green hair-like growth on the sepals surrounding the unopened flower buds.

The shrub will grow 4-5 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide and does best in full sun. Grow in moist but well-drained fertile soil and mulch around the roots to help retain moisture. Water well especially during dry periods. Prune in late winter to remove any diseased, damaged or crossed canes.

The large double fragrant flowers are pink with lighter edges and 40 or more petals. The deep green leaves contrast nicely and have few pricles.

This compact shrub is container-friendly to enjoy on the patio. Use in small groups, as a specimen, in a cutting garden, an English garden or a cottage garden.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Watch for black spot and powdery mildew. See pests of roses to the left. Deer will browse roses.
