Rosa 'Green Ice' is a miniature deciduous rose cultivar with clusters of soft pink buds that open into fully double, creamy white blooms, then mature to a light green with a light fragrance. Blooming occurs in early summer, and each small flower is about 1 inch in diameter with a small center eye. The leaves are small, leathery, dark green, and glossy. This small shrub grows 8 to 12 inches tall and 2 to 3 feet wide with a compact, mounding habit. This miniature rose was introduced in 1971 and was bred by Ralph S. Moore. It is a member of the rose family (Rosaceae).
Prefers full sun and rich, well-drained soil. It is winter-hardy in zones 5 to 9. Fertilize the shrub in early spring and during blooming, but stop when the plant begins preparing for dormancy in mid to late August. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage repeat blooming, and remove weak or dead canes and yellowing leaves. Hummingbirds and butterflies are attracted to this plant. Protect the rose over winter by covering it with leaves, which should be removed in spring.
Rosa 'Green Ice' is a prolific bloomer. The double flowers have up to 45 petals. The bloom cycle lasts about 10 to 20 days and repeats in 2 to 3 weeks. The repeat waves of flowers continue through the summer and fall.
Consider the delicate, repeat-blooming Rosa 'Green Ice' as a border planting, or as an accent, specimen, or container planting. This easy-care miniature rose is just right for beginners.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Rosa 'Green Ice' has good disease resistance. Potential insect pests include spider mites and aphids. The dense foliage may make it susceptible to black spots and powdery mildew. Provide good air circulation.
