Description

'Felicite Parmentier' is a hybrid old-fashioned alba shrub in the rose family (Rosaceae) bred by Louis-Joseph-Ghislain Parmentier of Belgium in 1836. Parentage is unknown.

It will grow 3-4 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide in a dense upright form. Plant in full sun to partial shade in amended moist well-drained garden soil. Prune lightly the first two years then prune after flowering to 1/3 its size. Remove dead or diseased canes.

The 2-3 inch flowers are light pink and fade to cream, are usually quartered with 26-40 petals and a strong fragrance. They bloom once in spring or summer in tight clusters. The leaves are gray-green on stems with prickles.

Received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Use this shrub in groups as a hedge or in the border. Plant in a cutting garden, English garden or cottage garden. It could also be grown in a container.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Watch for diseases encouraged by humidity like black-spot, rust and powdery mildew. See pests of roses to the left. Deer will browse roses.
