Champney's rose is a hybrid Noisette climbing rose in the Rosaceae family bred by John Champneys of the United States in 1810. It was bred in South Carolina for the southeastern climate. Parentage is Rosa moschata Herrm. × Parsons' Pink China.
This rose can grow 4 to 20 feet tall and will spread 6-10 feet wide. Plant in full sun in amended well-drained garden soil. Prune in late winter to remove dead or diseased canes and to control size.
The 2-3 inch pale pink semi-double blooms have a strong sweet fragrance and begin blooming in clusters in spring with good repeat blooming through fall. The foliage is a glossy green and the stems have prickles.
Use this rose on a tall vertical surface as a wall or arbor. It can also be pruned into a large shrub form if desired. Use as a specimen or a hedge in a formal or informal garden.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Good disease resistance. See pests of roses to the left. Deer will browse roses.
