- Description
-
Belle Poitevine is a hybrid rugosa in the rose family (Rosaceae) bred by François-Georges-Léon Bruant of France in 1894. Parentage is seedlings of R. rugosa regeliana.
This is an erect well-branched shrub that will grow 3.5 to 6 feet tall with a 3-5 foot spread. Plant in full sun to partial shade in fertile moist well-drained soil.
The deep pink blend flowers are semi-double with a strong fragrance and occur in flushes from spring through fall. The foliage is the typical ragusa wrinkly leaf with deep veins. The stems are loaded with prickles.
Use this rose as a hedge, in the border, as a specimen and in the formal or informal garden.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Good disease resistance. See pests of roses to the left. Deer will browse roses but this one is very prickly which helps deter them.
