- Description
-
The shrimp plant is a perennial evergreen tropical shrub or small tree that grows up to 3 to 6 feet tall in its native habitat and has unusual flowers that resemble shrimp; hence the common name, shrimp plant. This plant is native to East Himalaya to Myanmar and is found in forest as undergrowth. It is a member of the acanthus family (Acanthaceae). In temperate regions, it is often used as an ornamental houseplant..
This plant thrives in part shade or bright indirect light. It also prefers moist, well-drained, organic rich soils and a warm and humid environment.
The plant size ranges from 1 to 4 feet, and its stems are thin. The leaves are evergreen, velvety, bright green, and elliptic to oblanceolate. The flowers are borne terminally and are showy, long lasting, small, tubular, white with the throat speckled in maroon. The colorful bracts that surround the flower contribute to the blooms shrimp-like appearance. The bract colors range from orange, yellow, green, or gold. Pollinators and hummingbirds are attracted to these beautiful flowers. Blooming occurs from December to February in its tropical habitats, and the fruits are produced from March to April.
This striking tropical plant can be used in the garden in warm climates, but in North Carolina, it is best used as houseplant.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Monitor for spider mites and whiteflies.
Please note: Phlogacanthus guttatus appears to be frequently confused with another plant known as Justicia brandegeeana, whose common name is also shrimp plant, but it is native to Central America.
