Description

The genus Parodia is native to Colombia, Bolivia, southern Brazil and northern Argentina. In the wild, they can be found in grasslands, rocky cliffs, and gravelly slopes. Many species are small to medium-sized cacti and are popular as houseplants since they are easy to grow. They stay small and have interesting stems, spines, and large, showy flowers. The genus name, Parodia, honors Domingo Parodi who was involved in plant research in Paraguay. There are 71 accepted species, and they are members of the cactus family (Cactaceae).

These plants prefer full sun to partial shade and well-drained, acidic soils of sand and loam or potting mix suitable for cacti or succulents. Allow the soil to completely dry out between watering. Avoid standing water and prevent the body of the plant from getting wet. Water moderately during the growing season and keep the plant dry during the winter months. They are hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 9 to 11. In cooler climates the plants need to be brought inside during the winter. They may be propagated by seeds.

The plants in this genus are globose or have short cylinders. They may be solitary or have a clumping habit. The stems are ribbed and tuberculate, and the spines vary from thin and sparse to dense and stiff. The flowers occur at the apex of the stem and appear to be sitting on top of the each stem. They are 1-2 inches in diameter, funnel-shaped, erect, and the flower color varies depending on the species. The stigma is prominent and has a contrasting color. The fruits are berry-like, greenish-yellow tinged with pink, tiny, round, fuzzy, spiny, and contain small black seeds.

These small to medium size and low maintenance cacti have beautiful flowers and would be a great addition to your collection. Consider this plant to brighten a window sill or add interest to a sunny area in your home. In warm climates consider one of these species as a container plant for your patio.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Monitor for mealybugs, spider mites, whiteflies, and aphids. Overwatering or soggy soils will result ins root rot or fungal infections. Monitor the stems for sunburn is very hot climates. Wear protective gloves when handling cacti with sharp spines.
