Best grown in average, medium moisture, loose well-drained soil in full sun to part shade, but prefers full sun and does not tolerate extreme wet or dry sites. Adaptable tree with amber to brown peeling bark, and pea-like flowers at an early age, and is a good street tree.
Fragrant, pea-like flowers appear in late Spring. Produces 2-4" flat seed pods in Fall, with non-showy Fall color. Rounded crown, low trunk, with stiff, spiny interlacing branches.
