Description

Calathea medallion is a herbaceous perennial in the prayer plant family (Marantaceae) and native to the rainforests of Ecuador. This plant has large, oval to round, deep green leaves with light green variegations and makes an excellent tropical houseplant. This particular species does not fold its leaves in the evening as other prayer plants. Its large, rounded leaves are similar to a medallion; hence, the common names,  Calathea medallion and medallion prayer plant. The specific epithet veitchiana, is in honor of Sir Harry Veitch, who was an English horticulturist that cultivated and imported plants from South America in the 19th century. His family owned a nursery, James Veitch and Sons, in Chelsea, London, and he helped establish the Chelsea Flower Show.

This plant prefers bright, indirect light or partial shade and moist, well-drained potting mix. Use distilled or rain water to water this plant since tap water contains fluoride that can cause the leaf edges and tips to brown. The room temperature should range from 65 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity level above 60%. Avoid cold drafts, sudden temperature changes, and wet to soggy soil.. To increase the humidity, consider using a humidifier or place a pebble tray with water under the plant. The houseplant's environment should mimic the warm and humid environment of its native tropical rainforest. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during the plant's growing season from spring and summer. Dust will collect on the leaves and will slow photosynthesis. Gently wipe the leaves with a damp clean cloth to remove any dust. The best method of propagation is division.

This slow-growing plant has an upright and busy habit and rhizomatous root system. The upper surface of the leaves has deep green background with a lime green and creamy white feathered brushstroke pattern, and the undersides are deep burgundy. Flowers are rarely seen.

This plant is an excellent accent plant for your home or office. Consider placing this plant in the kitchen or bathroom where the humidity levels are usually higher.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Monitor for aphids, mealybugs, scale insects, spider mites, and thrips. Overwatering can cause root rot. Leaf spots can occur from wetting the leaves when watering or poor air circulation. Tap water contains fluoride that can cause the leaf edges and tips to brown.  Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves.
