- Description

The pinstripe plant is a tropical herbaceous perennial evergreen and native understory plant in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Colombia and Southwest Venezuela. It frequently used as a houseplant and is considered one of the most elegant of the Goeppertia species. The plant has an erect and clumping habit. The mature foliage is dark green with thin stripes of pale pinkish-white on the upper surface, and the undersides have a purplish hue. It is a member of the prayer plant family (Marantaceae). The specific epithet, ornata, is Latin and means "decorated," "embellished," or "ornate." This references the decorative appearance of this species' foliage.
The main requirements for this plant are bright, indirect light or partial shade, moist, well-drained, potting mix that is designed for African violets or peat-based mix, warm temperatures, high humidity, and fertilization monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Avoid overwatering or allowing the soil to dry out. Keep the room temperature between 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity about 60%. If needed, purchase a humidifier or place the potted plant on a tray of wet pebbles. Dust collecting on its leaves can interfere with photosynthesis. This can be resolved by wiping the leaves gently with a clean damp cloth. The best method of propagation is by rhizomatous root division.
The young leaves are broad, oval, smooth, glossy, and bright green with pale pinkish-white pinstripes. The mature leaves transition from bright green to dark green. As with other species of Goeppertia, the leaves close or fold at night and reopen at sunrise. This is in response to light and temperature changes. The foliage of this species is its most notable feature. It does produce flowers when grown outdoors in its native habitat. They are small, spiked, and white blooms, but they are rarely produce flowers when grown indoors as a houseplant.
The pinstripe plant serves as an air purifier and also has decorative appeal. It is a popular choice for use in homes or offices.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Typical houseplant pests like spider mites, thrips, mealybugs, whiteflies, and scale insects can occur. Inadequate water can cause leaf curling, and leaves turning brown may be from cold drafts, lack of humidity, or too much direct sun. Spots on the leaves can be indicative of leaf spot caused by wetting the leaves or inadequate air circulation. Overwatering can cause root rot.
