Description

Goeppertia orbifolia is herbaceous perennial evergreen that is native to the rainforests of Eastern Brazil and has large glossy green leaves with silver-green striped round leaves. It makes a strikingly beautiful houseplant. This species is a member of the prayer plant family (Marantaceae). The specific epithet, orbifolia, is derived from the Latin word orbis, meaning " a circle" and folium, meaning "leaf."

Caring for this plant requires bright, indirect light or partial shade and moist, well-drained, slightly acidic potting mix. The plant needs to be consistently moist but not wet or soggy. Distilled water or rain water is preferred since the fluoride in tap water can cause the leaf tips to brown. Consistent temperatures of 65 to 75 degrees and and high humidity of at least 60% is needed to make this plant thrive. Avoid cold drafts and room temperature fluctuations. The humidity can be increased by using a humidifier or by placing the plant container on a tray of wet pebbles. Fertilize your plant monthly during the growing season. Dust that collects on the leaves can interfere with photosynthesis. Wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove the dust on a regular basis. Division during the spring in the recommend method of propagation.

This plant  is a compact, dense, columnar, and forms erect clumps that grow up to 2 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide. Their identifying feature is the round shaped leaves and each leaf can measure up to 12 inches in width. The leaf's background is dark green, and it is accented by the silver-green stripes. The underside of the leaf blade is pale green to silver. The flowers are small and white. Unfortunately, indoor plant rarely flowers.

Goeppertia orbifolia is used as an ornamental, and its lush green foliage will brighten your home or office. It is the perfect size for tabletops or for use as a floor planter. The added benefit is that it is an air purifier.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  No serious insect or disease problems. Monitor for mealybugs, spider mites, aphids, and scale insects. Overwatering can cause root rot. Wetting the foliage when watering can cause leaf spot. Brown leaf edges and tips are the result of low humidity or from using tap water containing fluoride. The leaves can curl from lack of water or low humidity. Fading of the leaf color is caused by insufficient light. Direct sun can scorch the leaves.
