- Description
-
Goeppertia fasciata is a tropical evergreen species native to the rainforests of Northeastern Brazil. It is a rare houseplant that has large foliage with a bold pattern. It is a member of the prayer plant family (Marantaceae). The specific epithet, fasciata, means "broadly banded or striped with color" and references the plants leaves.
This plant prefers partial shade, and moist, well-drained, loamy soil. When growing as a houseplant, consider using a potting mix that it used for African violets. It prefers an acidic to neutral pH. The plant should be watered regularly, but the soil should not be soggy. These plants are sensitive to the fluoride contained in tap water. Preferably, use distilled water or rain water for watering. The ideal room temperature for this plant is between 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid sudden temperature changes and drafts. Since they are tropical plants, they thrive in humidity levels of 50 to 60%. They are best propagated by division in the spring or summer.
Goeppertia fasciata can grow up to 3 to 4 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide and has a rhizomatous root system. It has large, round to oblong deep green leaves with light green to gray stripes and midribs. The undersides of the leaves are dark red to purple. in its native habitat, the flowers are small, white, blooming in the spring or summer, but It rarely flowers as a houseplant.
Plants that are in bright, indirect light and have high humidity will grow more vigorously. Goeppertia fasciata can be grown as a houseplant. The kitchen or bathroom will be ideal places since they tend to be the more humid areas of the home. The striking foliage will be an asset to any indoor space, plus it has the added benefit of filtering indoor air pollutants.
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Monitor for fungus gnats, spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Overwatering can cause root rot. Too much sunlight can cause browning of the leaves. Browning tip and edges can be a sign of inadequate water or low humidity levels. Inadequate conditions stunt the growth of this plant.
