'Scentsation' is a highly fragrant cultivar of Gardenia jasminoides in the Rubiaceae family. It is an evergreen shrub with thick, glossy, dark green leaves, noted for its extremely fragrant white flowers that will bloom throughout the year where temperatures do not dip below 60°F. In climates with cooler winters, it typically blooms from late spring to early summer. If possible, site near a doorway, window, or other area where the fragrant scent can be appreciated. The genus name honors Alexander Garden (1730-1791), a Scottish physician, botanist and zoologist. The species name means like jasmine.
'Scentsation', like most gardenia species and cultivars, does best in a well-drained, humus-rich, acidic soil, in full sun to moderate shade. You should plant it away from competitive tree roots in a permanent site where it will not be disturbed. You can also provide an acidic fertilizer or iron compounds, as well as organic matter, compost or mulch. However, do not fertilize gardenias in the fall as it will stimulate growth that may not survive the winter. Prune shrubs after they have finished flowering. If grown as a container plant, bring it indoors before first frost, provide bright light and moderate temperatures, average to high humidity and well-drained, acidic soil and water moderately.
