White Peruvian lily is a hybrid of lily of the Incas in the Alstroemeriaceae family, native to South America and introduced by A.M. Könst in 1990. Genus name honors Swedish botanist Klaus von Alstroemer (1736-1794) who was a student and friend of Carolus Linnaeus.
The plant will grow 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide prefering full sun and fertile, well-drained moist soil. This is one of the most vigorous and hardy of this group of plants. It spreads slowly by thick rhizomes and can be divided as needed.
The plant produces clusters of large white flowers with maroon markings on the petals and flushed with pink on the back of the petals. Attracts bees, butterflies and hummingbirds with its summer-long blooms. Use gloves to handle the plants as contact dermatitis and eye irritation can occur.
Use in a cutting garden, pollinator garden or cottage garden. It is a popular plant with the cut flower trade.
Insects, Diseases and Other Plant Problems: No significant problems. Watch for slugs, snails and spider mites.
