What to look for: This simple but pleasing planting will greet you every time you enter your home. The variegated and chartreuse leaves of the hostas add a pop of color to the summer shade and the azaleas bring colorful flowers when winter turns to spring. The cycad adds a tropical flair. This grouping is great for partial shady small spaces.

Horticulture: Plants grown near the coast have to overcome additional challenges. The air is saltier, the nights are warmer and the humidity is intense. Soils can also be sandier and need to be amended with compost. Mulch helps to retain moisture.
