Description

Plants in this genus of wildflowers belong to the orchid family and are known as Butterfly Orchids or Fringed Orchids. There are about 100 species with 37 being native to North America. They grow in a wide range of soil types and habitats with most requiring moderate moisture. The flowers are generally borne singly in various colors and can be sparse to dense and showy. In NC, P. psycodes is a small purple Fringed Orchid native to the mountains and is 1 of 16 native to our state. However, many are threatened or rare.

Depending on the variety, they could be used in wetland or woodland sites.
