Emerald Fountain® is a small, slow-growing, needled evergreen shrub or tree in the pine family (Pinaceae). A cultivar of Canadian hemlock, it has a columnar form that reaches a height of 6 to 10 feet and width of 2 to 3 feet. The genus name, Tsuga, originated from the Japanese word that means "mother" and "tree." The epithet means “of Canada,” referring to the origin of the species.
Emerald Fountain grows in partial to full shade but needs moist well-drained soils. Cooler areas are best as it doesn't tolerate drought or the heat and humidity of the Southeast. It can primarily be planted as an understory tree and needs protection from the afternoon sun in southern locations. Foliage may scorch and prolonged drought can be fatal to the tree. It requires little to no pruning and is resistant to deer and black walnut. Winter mulching is helpful for the plant’s survival.
The flat needles have two white bands on the undersides, adding year round interest to the foliage.
This tree can be used in a naturalized or recreational play area along a slope or bank in a woodland landscape. It’s great in a children’s garden and a rock, shade or winter garden. It can be used as a border or hedge for screening and privacy and as a specimen shade tree or used in a small grouping.
Fire Risk: This plant has a high flammability rating and should not be planted within the defensible space of your home. Select plants with a low flammability rating for the sites nearest your home.
