Description

This is a genus of about 6 herbaceous, perennial bulbs in the amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae) native to Ecuador to Peru. The name is derived from the Greek eu-, beautiful, and krossos, a fringe, referring to the long stamens.

These bulbs generally bloom in spring to summer with clusters of tubular nodding flowers with long stamens. Color and size vary per species. They prefer moist soil in full sun to partial shade when growing. Bulbs will spread by off-sets, are hardy to about 50 degrees F and will need to be stored during cold weather. Check instructions for the variety and species for winter storage. Check for and discard any that shrivel or rot periodically.  If growing in a pot, be sure to use a well-draining mix in a pot with lots of drainage holes. When the leaves wither keep the bulb warm and dry. When leafing out or flowering begins you can provide water.

These plants are best grown as a house plant or in a heated greenhouse if you don't live in the tropics. The flowers are quite showy.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Bulb rot can occur in poorly drained soils
