Deutzia x lemoinei

Lemoine Deutzia is a dense, erect, twiggy, hybrid shrub that grows 5 to 7 feet tall. In late spring, clusters of pure white flowers bloom. The multi-stemmed, erect branches have medium green foliage that changes to yellow in the fall. This plant is the hardiest Deutzia to zone 5 and warmer areas of zone 4. The genus Deutzia is a member of the Hydrangeaceae or hydrangea family.

Lemoine Deutzia is a hybrid shrub that is a cross between Deutzia gracilis and Deutzia parviflora. A cultivar for this hybrid is 'Compacta' that is a dwarf form with a height of 4 feet.

The genus, Deutzia, honors a Dutch amateur botanist from the 1700's, Johan van der Deutz. The hybrid name, lemoinei, honors a French nurseryman, Victor Lemoine, who developed the plant in Nancy, France in 1891.

This shrub easily grows in average, well-drained moist garden soil and prefers full sun to partial shade. It tolerates a wide range of soil types. Pruning is required to maintain the shrub's shape and to remove the dead stems. This should be done immediately after flowering.

Lemoine Deutzia has exfoliating bark and slender brown stems. The leaves are opposite and are 1.5 to 2.5 inches long. The showy tiny white flowers appear in 1- to 3-inch-long clusters. The fruits follow the flowers and are a dry capsule.

The Lemoine Deutzia is recommended for foundation plantings, borders, hedges, or woodland settings.
