Cedrus deodara 'Pendula'

Phonetic Spelling
SAY-drus day-oh-DAR-ah
Description

Spreading shrub to groundcover with tumbling, pendulous growth.  Best to stake when young.  If not trained to grow upwards, it will naturally grow into a broad, spreading plant with its spread broader than its height.  Its weeping, spreading habit lead to it being chosen as a plant growing in a solitary situation.  It's often used in parks, cemeteries, industrial locations and your home garden.  Does best in a well-drained loam, however, will grow in soils composed of clay, sand, or chalk.

Resistant to Verticillium wilt.

Quick ID:

  • All Cedrus genus members have new needles that are born singly on stems
  • Needles are triangular to quadrangular in cross-section
  • Female woody barrel-shaped cones sit on top of branches

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:  Cannot thrive in high-pH soils.  Saplings are highly sensitive to frost.  Protect from strong winds.
