- Description
-
Corkscrew willow is a fast-growing, deciduous tree in the willow family (Salicaceae) and native to Asia. It has a weeping habit and contorted branches, shoots and leaves. It will reach 20 to 30 feet in height with a 10 to 15 foot spread. The form name is Latin for “tortuous.”
Plant this willow in average soil in moist to wet sites and in full sun. This tree will not tolerate dry sites. Contortion increases with vigor, so pollarding will enhance it. Stems can be used in flower arrangements, fresh or dried. Although fast-growing, it is short-lived. This tree is resistant to black walnut and damage by deer. Willows are notorious for their aggressive root systems that can invade wells, septic tanks, and other structures. Keep this tree well away from structures.
Use corkscrew willow as a specimen tree in a lawn or near a pond or riparian area to add winter interest to the landscape. It is also perfect for a rain or winter garden.
Insects, Diseases and Other Plant Problems: It is susceptible to blights, powdery mildew, leaf spots and cankers. Insects include aphids, scale, borers, lacebugs and caterpillars.
