- Description
-
For years, disease-resistant roses have been on the market, only to disappoint Southern gardeners. Now you’ll need to look no further.
The Knockout Red Rose has found its place in the hearts of American gardeners. Unlike its predecessors, Knockout Red has the grit to withstand our hot, humid weather.
This exciting rose cultivar is a shrub rose that usually grows about 3 feet tall and wide. As the weather warms, 3-inch diameter, cherry-red blooms appear as terminal clusters of single flowers. The flowers have a mild tea rose fragrance and are attractive to butterflies. As long as the plants continue to grow through spring, summer, and fall, this rose will continue to flower.
Like nearly all roses, Knockout Red Rose performs best in full sun with fertile, well-drained slightly acidic soil but it will withstand partial shade and is one of the few roses that will bloom in partial shade. Prune during the growing season on an “as needed” basis to manage plant size though they require less pruning than most roses. Water during periods of drought to maintain a continual supply of flowers and be sure to mulch the roots well to maintain moisture and consistent soil temperatures. Use this plant as a specimen, in the back of a border, planted in small groups, or as a hedge in a cottage or sensory garden.
Chosen in 2000 as an All-America Rose Award winner, this plant is truly a knockout!
Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: Roses are susceptible to many diseases though this cultivar is more resistant than others. Keeping good air circulation around the plant and avoiding overhead watering is critical to reduction of foliar diseases. It is susceptible to rose rosette which is a witches broom caused by a virus that is spread through mites. It can quickly spread to other roses in the surrounding area and the only treatment is the removal of infected plants.
