Also known as Ruellia brittoniana, but R. simplex is preferred, as it is the name first given to the plant when described in Cuba. Native to Mexico, considered invasive in Florida; naturalizes from South Carolina to Texas and Hawaii. Seeds freely; some cultivars are sterile ('Purple Showers') but may spread by rhizomes. Tolerates soil conditions from wet to dry, thus suitable for rain gardens. This plant is seldom damaged by deer and is slightly salt tolerant.
