Achillea tomentosa

Woolly Yarrow is a low growing species used as a groundcover.  This semi-evergreen perennial does well in dry, sandy soils, and will grow in poor soils as well if good drainage is provided.   Soils that are high in organic material, are primarily clay, or overly moist should be avoided. Finding a location protected from strong winds is ideal. 

The yellow flowers bloom in dense clusters from spring into summer.  To promote additional blooming, deadhead once the flowers are no longer blooming.  Cutting the plant down to the basal leaves after flowering may also encourage an additional fall bloom and will keep a neater appearance in the garden.  Divide the plant in early spring or fall every few years or as it becomes crowded.

Wolly Yarrow is deer, rabbit, and drought resistant and withstands light foot traffic.  Plant it in a rock garden, plant it in a container, or use it to edge a garden space.  The plants are not tolerant of heat and humidity and will deteriorate as the temperatures and humidity rise so this plant is not recommended for planting in the southern USA south of zone 7.

The genus name Achillea comes from the greek hero Achilles, and tomentosa means wooly hairs.
