Description

Brugmansia x candida, or Yellow Angel's Trumpet, is a 5 foot flowering shrub or small tree with large white or pink flowers. The plant grows well in organically rich, well-drained soil, in full sun. In the spring and summer, the plant will respond to regular fertilization with new growth and flowers. The flowers are 6 to 12 inches long, fragrant and pendulous (hanging) with yellow flowers that mature to white or pink. Yellow Angel's Trumpet is typically grown as a container plant or houseplant, but can be placed in the landscape as a woody or herbaceous shrub. However, the plant is only recommended for outside planting in zones 8 through 10 and is cold-hardy only to 40 degrees F. Keep in mind that if the plant is brought indoors for the winter, it will defoliate. In the first year after planting, Angel's Trumpet can grow to 3 feet tall, but flowering is minimal. In the following year, it will grow taller, but with more flowering. This plant is resistant to damage by deer.

If eaten in large quantities, this plant can be toxic. Ingestion of leaves or seeds and inhalation of flowers can lead to hallucinations, dry mouth, muscle weakness, increased blood pressure and pulse, fever, dilated pupils, and paralysis.
