This clump-forming perennial prefers dry, sandy or rocky soils and tolerates summer heat well. It is a North American native often seen in rocky woods or slopes, prairies or gravel areas along streams. The blooms are fluffy and thistle-like on erect leafy stems. Leaves are narrow, lanceolate-oblong in shape.
