Ning-po Deutzia is a medium-sized deciduous shrub that has an open habit and flaking bark. The leaves are papery and lance-shaped leaves and panicles of white or pink flowers bloom during the summer months. The shrub is a member of the Hydrangeaceae or hydrangea family.
Ning-po is a native of Central and Southeast China, and it is typically found in mixed forests, mountain slopes, and valleys.
The genus name, Deutzia, honors a Dutch amateur botanist from the 1700s, Johan van der Deutz. The species name, ningpoenesis, and the common name, Ning-po, are most likely named for the port city, Ningpo or Ningbo, which is in eastern China and south of Shanghai. The Chinese word, Ningbo or Ning-po, translated means "peaceful waves."
The shrub prefers moist, well-drained soils but is accepting of most soil types. It flowers best in full sun but does tolerate partial shade.
The shrub matures to a height from 3 to 8 feet in 5 to 10 years and is nearly as wide. The stems are reddish-brown, and the leaves are green on the upper surface and grayish-green on the undersides. The leaves have a papery texture and are densely hairy on the undersides of the leaf. The star-shaped flowers are white or pink and are arranged in clusters measuring 2 to 5 inches long. They flower from May to July. Fruit capsules follow the flowers and are seen from September to October.
Ning-po Deutzia could be considered in USDA Hardiness Zone 5 to 8. This low maintenance and drought tolerant shrub may be used on banks or slopes or in flower beds and borders.
