Daphne x mantensiana

Phonetic Spelling
DAF-nee m-ant-en-si-an-uh
Description

This Daphne is low-growing shrub to 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide. The pink blooms occur in clusters of very fragrant flowers in mid-spring and may rebloom in late summer. The glossy green leaves are semi to evergreen.

Daphnes can be finicky to grow, but if you like a challenge and love fragrant flowers then choose your site wisely. Preference is for partial sun to partial shade with protection from cold winds. The soil must be very well-drained, moist to partly dry and not too fertile. They like clay to sandy soils. Daphnes don't take well to transplanting or excessive pruning either and have been known to die for no apparent reason.

Use this shrub in a border, as a foundation plant, in small spaces or on slopes. Plant where the poisonous berries are not accessible to pets.
