Very tidy clumping habit in good, medium to moist soil with protection from strong afternoon sun. This plant is native to the Southeastern US and is seldom damaged by deer or rabbits.

Foliage:
3 to 7 in., egg-shaped leaves, rounded at base; taper pointed tip; sharply toothed.
Flower:
Up to 1-in., deep pink to rose-purple flowers; the corolla has a sharp ridge on its back; lower lip is bearded with deep yellow hairs.
Site:
Rich, moist soil; sun to partial shade; wet woods, along streams
