Camellia 'Winter's Star'

Common Name(s):

Phonetic Spelling
ka-MEE-lee-ah
Description

The Winter's Star Camellia is an early fall season upright dense shrub that would make a great specimen plant or would do well planted in a mixed shrub bed or border. It is at home in woodland gardens, and can be used effectively as screen or informal hedge planting.  It does not get too large so it is ideal for small spaces and can even be planted in a big pot.

Like most Camellias, this plant needs consistently moist, well-drained, acidic soil with high organic matter.  Provide a sheltered site as flower and leaf buds may experience damage by cold winter winds. Early morning and direct afternoon sun can be too harsh so plant in partial shade and be aware that an area too heavily shaded can limit flowering. The size and shape of the plant can be controlled and overall health improved by pruning the branches after flowering.

This showy plant is great for cut flowers and is mildly resistant to damage by deer.

'Winter's Star' is a large violet-pink single form flower Ackerman hybrid (learn more about the Winter Series hybrids) from the parent plants Camellia oleifera 'Lu Shan Snow' (cold hardiness) and Camellia hiemalis 'Showa-no-sakae' (flower form).

Insects and Diseases: Camellias are susceptible to viruses and some fungal diseases such as dieback, cankers, flower blight, and root rot.  Watch for scales, aphids, plant hoppers and spider mites as they can be problematic when plants are stressed.
