What to look for: The Rose Garden, which is located in the Coastal Plain region of southeastern North Carolina, contains over 50 kinds of roses, in all shapes and sizes. As you walk through the garden, you’ll find it displays the beauty and assortments of this timeless flowering shrub. Some key rose bushes to look for in the garden are:
Lady Banks rose (Rosa banksiae)
Mr. Lincoln rose (Rosa 'Mister Lincoln')
Neil Diamond rose (Rosa 'WEKdereroro')
Francis Meilland rose (Rosa 'Meitroni')
Julia Child rose (Rosa Julia Child™ 'WEKvossutono')
Veterans Honor rose (Rosa 'JACopper')
Tiffany rose (Rosa x hybrida)
Butterfly rose (Rosa chinensis ‘Mutabilis’)
Horticulture: Growing healthy roses means choosing hardy, disease-resistant types. This site was selected because it has morning sun, which is ideal, as it helps to dry foliage and can protect the plant from scorching afternoon heat. This garden has drip irrigation, which helps the roses avoid fungal diseases. The plants are fertilized during the growing season. In late winter, they are pruned to encourage healthy new growth and improved flowering. Mulch helps to keep the soil moist and regulate temperature.
