Weeping Higan Cherry is a deciduous, grafted small tree that grows up to 40' tall. It has ascending branches, slender branchlets, and is pendulous and scabrate. This plant is commonly grafted on Prunus avium rootstock. This plant has no good fall color. Several cultivars of this species are pendulous and part of the Pendula Group of cultivars including: 'Pendula', 'Io Sakura', 'Shidare Higan', 'Pendula Plena Rosea', 'Yae-shidare-higan', 'Pendula Rosea', and 'Plena Rubra'. This plant is the most cold, heat, and stress tolerant cherry. It is easy to transplant and casts light shade. Wood splits easily with wind or ice and it is not smog tolerant. This tree is frequently damaged by deer. It also has viral and fungal disease problems and is susceptible to bores and scale.
