Jimsonweed is a tender, annual herb or herbaceous perennial and a member of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The stem is green to purplish, ill-scented, with alternate, simple, coarsely toothed leaves. The flower is solitary, large, tubular with 5 shallow lobes at top, white or lavender. Flowers open at night and are fragrant. They are visited by nocturnal moths.
It is found in weedy in disturbed areas, along roadsides, old fields, pastures, and waste places and as a weed in gardens. The species is frost sensitive. It is a host plant for the Hawk moth (Sphingidae).
All parts are poisonous if consumed. Species of Datura are sometimes confused with those of Brugmansia (also called angel's trumpet), but Datura flowers face upward, whereas Brugmansia flowers are pendulous.
